Technical recommendations on clinical renal MRI

This task force develops consensus-based recommendations on the acquisition and analysis of clinical renal MRI. The task force has so far delivered a paper describing a consensus formation process and five papers with consensus statements on T1&T2 mapping, BOLD, ASL, DWI and Phase contrast (see our list of renal MRI resources). Currently the task force is setting up a process for maintaining and updating the recommendations in the future, and creating a repository of data and protocols compliant with the current consensus.

Aims

This task force develops and maintains technical recommendations on how to measure renal MRI biomarkers on clinical scanners. If you are starting a clinical study, you will find here concrete guidelines on how to set up the acquisition, and you can be reassured that the approach will be accepted by a broad body of experts in the field. 

We expect this to lead to a significant improvement in efficacy of research by eliminating the need for local development and optimisation. It will also form a driver for a more standardised approach, improving comparability of results by different teams, and establishing a common benchmark to evaluate future developments.

The task force is led by Steven Sourbron (chair) and Pim Pullens (co-chair).


Status

A process for developing consensus-based recommendations has been defined, published and applied to Relaxometry, Diffusion, Arterial Spin Labelling, BOLD and Phase-Contrast MRI. Currently we are working on setting up a process to update the recommendations and make compliant protocols available. This includes the setup of a Study Group on renal MRI within the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (www.ismrm.org), that will maintain the recommendations in the future. 


Process

Consensus formation in this task force follows a predefined process that is written out in an open access publication:

The process includes the formation of expert panels for each MRI technique, who will develop an initial set of consensus statements (version 1.0) following a Delphi-like process and informed by a systematic review of the literature. After publication of version 1.0, the panels will remain in existence and update the recommendations if and when substantial new evidence emerges that justifies a new round of consensus formation. 


Recommendations

Technical recommendations has been completed for renal ASL, DWI, T1 & T2 mapping, BOLD and Phase contrast. The first four are reported in a special issue on renal MRI published by MAGMA in January 2020:

Protocols

The task force also collects detailed technical specifications of MRI acquisition protocols compliant with the recommendations. A Github repository is created to collect the protocols. A placeholder release of the repository was created in Zenodo when the recommendations were submitted and this will be updated with a new formal release once a more complete set is available.

Updating of recommendations

We are currently working on a process for updating the recommendations in light of new evidence. 


Expert panels

The role of the expert panel is to develop recommendations for individual methods, review submitted protocols for compliance with the recommendations, and review requests for new recommendations or updates of existing recommendations.
